G.A.R ROAD SAFETY

Traffic safety on the Great Alpine Road through Sarsfield was one of the identified areas of concern during the many community consultations after the 2019/20 bushfires.

Because virtually every resident of Sarsfield has to enter onto or exit off the GAR the 100 kph speed limit was considered dangerous. Jo Petersen (Jo P) representing the SCA has co-ordinated and advocated on our behalf. After meetings with our local politicians, senior police and countless emails and phone communication with senior officials from Vic Roads the “battle” has continued.

Most of us were aware of the closure of the GAR recently after a very serious accident in Sarsfield. The Sarsfield couple were waiting to turn right into their residential street but giving way to oncoming traffic. They were rear ended! Their vehicle is a write off, Tony was airlifted to Melbourne with serious injuries and Joan suffered surface cuts and abrasions. They are both traumatized by the accident but fortunately Tony is now out of hospital and recuperating at home.

I reflect on the number of times I turn right (or even left) into my residential street and after clearly indicating remain stranded waiting for oncoming traffic. I nervously glance into my rear vision mirror “ praying” that a vehicle travelling at the 100kph speed limit can stop in time or mount the shoulder of the road and slip past! This personal reflection would be experienced by every resident of Sarsfield at some time.

Jo continues to advocate for a reduced speed limit on our behalf. Any Sarsfieldian who has any feedback, ideas or anecdotal evidence is encouraged to contact Jo or the SCA.
